This ancient fortress was built atop a plateau
The Masada, or “fortress” in Hebrew, is an ancient fort that was built atop a rock plateau. It is located on the eastern side of the Judaean Desert and overlooks the Dead Sea.
It is believed to have been built by Herod the Great between 37 and 31 BCE. Access to the site is pretty hard to navigate even today, which made it a great place to put a fortress. Herod also built two palaces for himself at the site.
