Australia’s Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space
Few places are as valuable to Earth as the Great Barrier Reef is. This coral reef system is the most extensive single structure made by living organisms, stretching approximately 1,400 miles. The structure is composed of billions of tiny organisms called coral polyps.
Many vulnerable or endangered species call it home, making it invaluable to our planet’s biodiversity. Unfortunately, rising ocean temperatures have severely damaged the structure by causing massive coral bleaching events.
