The city of Petra in Jordan was carved into the mountains

There is an ancient city hidden between the mountains of southern Jordan called Petra. It was built by the Nabataeans, a group of nomadic Arabs who took advantage of the city’s proximity to the incense trade routes and made it into a major regional trading hub.

The Al-Khazneh structure you see in the photo was built in the 1st century AD when Petra flourished. Experts think that it was meant to function as a mausoleum for king Aretas IV.
