Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world
Angkor Wat is famous for being the largest religious monument on the planet, and it occupies 402 acres. The name means “Temple City” and was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century to serve as a state temple and eventual mausoleum.
It is the best example of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. Although it was initially dedicated to Vishnu, a principal Hindu deity, it is now one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists.
