There were once 8-meter-tall mushrooms on Earth
The Earth was a very different place 420 to 350 million years ago. Trees had not yet evolved to grow as tall as they do today. However, that does not mean there were no giant plant-like structures inhabiting our prehistoric planet. The difference is that they were mushrooms.
These mushrooms could grow up to be 8 meters in height and were shaped like spires. Fossils of these organisms, which are called “Prototaxites,” were discovered by a Canadian paleontologist in 1859. In 2007, they were confirmed to be part of the fungi kingdom.
