7-UP’s original formula contained lithium citrate, a mood-stabilizing substance
The late 1800s and early 1900s were a wild time for soda creators. Many of today’s most popular soft drinks were first conceived during that era, but the original recipes were quite radical for present standards. Coca-Cola famously contained cocaine, and did you know that 7-UP also had a drug as an ingredient?
The original 1929 formula contained lithium citrate, a mood-stabilizing substance usually prescribed to treat bipolar disorder. The drink was first named “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda” and was marketed as a cure for hangovers. Of course, a drink with lithium in it would make you feel good.
