Pigeons were trained to detect breast cancer
Throughout the years, we have developed countless new tools to deal with cancer. Although the disease is not entirely curable even today, there have still been enormous advancements when it comes to treatments and tests. Scientists even managed to train pigeons to detect cancerous cells in breast tissue.
Scientists from the University of Iowa trained pigeons to read microscope images and identify whether they saw cancerous or non-cancerous cells. The animals achieved an accuracy level of 85% after only two weeks of training. This was possible thanks to birds’ impressive visual memory.
