Wounded combat dog during action on the Orote Peninsula, 1944
Dogs have always been man’s best friend, and this image proves the saying. The backstory of this picture goes as far as the late summer of 1942, when the Marine Corps decided to experiment with the use of dogs in war. They believed dogs had a long history of fighting battles alongside men.
However, this dog, which is the 1st Dog Platoon, got injured and is being treated by Guam, the First Lieutenant William R. Putney. The dogs ate, slept, walked, and otherwise lived with their masters and also alerted their handlers when the enemy came near.
