A covered Statue of David during World War II
The Statue of David, carved by Michelangelo, is another superb piece of art known for its beauty. It currently attracts millions of visitors to the Accademia Gallery, its home of residence.
This image shows several blocks of carefully arranged marbles around the statue as it was built to save Michelangelo’s work from damage during World War Two. It resulted from a collective agreement to protect the statue rather than moving it away from its initial position.
