A Royal Air Force pilot at Fairlop airfield in Essex getting a haircut in 1942
If this doesn’t go onto the list of one of the boldest or fiercest pictures of all time, then something is amiss with the list. This image shows a Royal Air Force pilot getting a haircut and reading Greenmantle by John Buchan.
The pilot was Francis Mellersh, and he was twice awarded Britain’s Distinguished Flying Cross and was also referred for the Victoria Cross. In addition, the plane in the background is a Supermarine Spitfire.
