The last public execution by guillotine, 1939
Eugen was a notorious German criminal and serial killer who was executed by guillotine in France in June 1939. It was also the last public execution in that country with the machine. The image shows a large crowd gathered outside to watch the beheading of Eugen.
Before his execution, he had a long list of punishable crimes, including a failed kidnapping attempt because his victim struggled too hard, forcing them to let him go and another kidnapping attempt in July 1937 of an acquaintance, a 22-year-old New York City dancer visiting her aunt Ida Sackheim in Paris.
