About 100 people participate in a lottery to divide a 12 acre plot of sand dunes, that would later become the city of Tel Aviv, 1909
For residents of Tel Aviv, this image shows the rudiments of how the city was structured and built. This photograph, taken in 1909, shows several Jewish families who gathered on a desolate dune to parcel the land by lottery using seashells.
This gathering is considered the official day of the establishment of Tel Aviv as the image shows the lottery organized by Akiva Arye Weiss, president of the building society, to share the vast land. Today, this place is now a busy street and neighborhood filled with businesses called Rothschild Boulevard. Some accolades should also be given to Avraham Soskin for taking the photograph.
