Carving an eye on Mount Rushmore, 1930s
Before the completion of the carvings on Mount Rushmore, it was a plain mountain with no detailing. This photograph captures the carving process of the faces on Mount Rushmore and shows how workers had to endure horrible weather conditions ranging from blazing hot to bitter cold and windy.
Each day they had to climb 700 stairs to the top of the mountain to punch in on the time clock, and 90% of the mountain was carved using dynamite, while the rest was by hand, as seen in the photograph.
