A WWI memorial in Hungary shows a family portrait with the father missing
The First World War saw unprecedented deaths and destruction. Even though there had been several years-long wars before this one, the massive casualties brought on by new mass warfare technologies and the unsanitary conditions in the trenches were what set this war apart from all those before it.
This monument serves to remind us that almost all families in Europe lost a loved one. Out of the few who came back, many were missing limbs, and many others bore scars of a different kind inside their minds. It was indeed a horrible time in history.
