A soldier helped this child cross over the Berlin Wall
For most of the Cold War, the city of Berlin in Germany was split in two by a reinforced concrete wall guarded by soldiers. This border separated sons and fathers, aunts and nephews, and it came up so suddenly that people were left stranded on either side.
That is probably what happened to this child, who split up from his family because of the newly installed barbed wire. Fortunately, a compassionate soldier found him and helped him cross over, directly defying his orders. This shows how human empathy prevails even in the hardest of times.
