Children going to church in style in 1940s Chicago
In 1940, a “Black World’s Fair” was held in Chicago to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of slavery. It was a celebration of African-American culture and black people’s contributions to history all over the world. One of the cornerstones of African-American culture was Sunday Service.
Sunday Service became the most important social event for many black communities. People went all out and wore their fanciest, most fashionable outfits to church. These children are the perfect embodiment of style with their pressed coats and clean white socks. Going to mass was a true celebration of their culture.
