Sailors salute a war veteran in Leningrad, modern St. Petersburg, in 1989
The Cold War was a time of great geopolitical tension during which two very different ideologies squared off in an international arena. The Soviet Union and the United States faced off through espionage and proxy wars.
Although they claimed opposing views about the world, the two powers had something in common: their respect for war veterans. Here, a group of sailors can be seen saluting a former soldier who lost the entire lower part of his torso. It was taken in 1989 in Leningrad, Russia, modern-day Saint Petersburg.
