Residents of Hanoi stand chest-deep in bomb shelters
The Vietnam war, or Second Indochina War, was officially fought between communist North Vietnam and anti-communist South Vietnam. However, it was a proxy war between the communist Soviet Union and the capitalist United States. American troops landed in the Asian country in 1955, and the war dragged on until 1975.
This picture shows residents of Hanoi, in what was formerly North Vietnam, waiting for all-clear in bomb shelters after an air raid alert. These were built on the city’s sidewalks so citizens could quickly hide from an incoming projectile.
