During the First World War, new weapons and technologies were introduced, which made this military confrontation one of the deadliest in all human history. Part of the problem was the overall combat strategy that was adopted, called “trench warfare,” of which you can still see the scars a century later.
This system of dug-up tunnels is often cited as one of the reasons World War I led to so many casualties. The constant exposure to water and cold made many soldiers sick, and the stalemates made it hard for supplies to reach combatants in the field.
