A couple from West Berlin show off their babies to their grandparents on the other side
For almost thirty years, the city of Berlin, Germany, was split in two by a massive concrete wall. Construction began overnight in 1961, aiming to separate Soviet East Germany from West Berlin. The measure was taken in response to the increasing number of Germans who were crossing over to the West.
The walls were constructed in record time, which meant that many families were split, and people were left stranded. This photo shows the complications of living in a divided city. A couple can be seen showing their babies off to their grandparents on the other side of the wall. This is heartbreaking.
