This innovative motor home is from 1922
The first motor homes, or R.V.s as they would later be known, were first constructed between 1915 and 1930. It allowed people to cross long distances while still enjoying modern comforts such as electrical appliances and comfortable bedding. The first of these vehicles to achieve national renown was the Conklin family’s “Gypsy Van.”
Their vehicle was outfitted with a full kitchen, Pullman-style bedding, and even a “roof garden.” The Conklins traveled from New York to San Francisco, and news outlets covered most of their journey. The motor home pictured is not their famous Gypsy Van but is still a marvelous example.
