A First Nation family from Alberta, Canada, in 1907
The Stoney Nakoda First Nation is a group of tribes that are native to the area of Alberta, Canada. In 1870, the government negotiated a treaty with the various chiefs. They allowed white settlers into their lands in exchange for aid to compensate for dwindling Buffalo herds and for the creation of Indian reserves.
This portrait was taken by Mary Schäffer in 1907. It shows Guide Samson Beaver, a member of the Stoney First Nation, alongside his wife Leah and daughter Frances Louise. Although the photo only has shades of brown, you can tell how rich their clothing was in terms of pattern and color.
