Native American teepees strewn across the Great Plains in 1800
The Great Sioux Nation, or Oceti Sakowin, as they prefer to be called, is a group of different Native American tribes who share similar dialects and cultural characteristics. They inhabited the Central Mississippi Valley region and were great warriors, so they were often depicted in tales of U.S. military confrontations.
This photo is believed to have been taken in the 1800s in Dakota territory, and it shows hundreds of teepees spread throughout the Great Plains. Native American stories are often overlooked, so it is precious to have historical archives that show how they lived.
