The subjects from the famous painting “American Gothic” recreated their poses years later
“American Gothic” by Grant Wood is one of the most iconic paintings of North American art. The artist was inspired to paint it by a building that was constructed in the “Carpenter Gothic” style. He imagined the people that would live in that house and asked his sister and his dentist to pose as them.
The sister’s name was Nan Wood Graham, and the doctor was Dr. Byron Mckeeby. Wood submitted the painting to the 1930 exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, and it won a $300 prize. Over ten years later, in 1942, Nan and Dr. Mckeeby were photographed recreating their original poses. The painting is estimated today at $7M.
