The city of Pavlopetri, near the southern Peloponnese
The Ancient city of Pavlopetri is considered to be the oldest city ever found underwater. It is located between the island of Elafosinos and Pounta Beach, off the coast of Laconia in the southern Peloponnese. The city’s name, Pavlopetri, translates as ‘Paul’s Stone.’
The city was discovered in the early 1900s. Still, people only started believing it existed in 1967 when oceanographer Nicholas Fleming visited the site. A year later, Fleming came along with other fellow archaeologists to map out the city and found many buildings, city streets, and squares.
