The S.S. Gairsoppa sunken during World War II
Not every sunken ship hides a legendary treasure, but some of them do. The S.S. Gairsoppa sank off the coast of Ireland after being hit by a German torpedo on February 17, 1941, in World War II.
In 2011 Odyssey Marine discovered the shipwreck and inspected it with a remotely operated vehicle. They found the S.S. Gairsoppa lying 3 miles below the surface of the North Atlantic. The ship’s cargo is worth $210 million in valuable metals.
