The richest tomb of the 5th millennium BC

In the 1970s, archaeological excavations near the modern city of Varna in Bulgaria discovered a large Copper Age necropolis dating back to the 5th millennium BC, containing the oldest gold artifacts ever discovered. This photo shows a tomb, inside of which the remains of a man of the highest rank were found.

The site was accidentally discovered while a tractor operator was digging a trench to lay an electric cable for a nearby factory. He became aware of small squares of gleaming yellow metal. Then, the objects were rushed to the local museum, where they were identified as prehistoric stone tools, corroded copper axes, and golden ornaments.
