This is one of Medusa’s heads in Istanbul, Turkey’s Yerebatan Basilica Cistern
The enormous cistern contains two columns with Medusa heads, but they are facing opposite directions. One lies upside down, and the other lies on its side. Some say that these two pillars are the odd ones; no others have a Medusa head, which is kind of peculiar. No matter what, it is a site to behold.
No one knows why, but one popular theory is that anyone who looked at them would turn into stone. The two Roman Medusa statues are supported by two columns in the northwest corner of the cistern. This is outstandingly unique and impressive for any visitor.
