Palace of Aigai, the most significant building in ancient Greece
One of Macedonia’s most beautiful mosaics was discovered in the palace of Vergina, ancient Aigai. The floor of the south wing, the private apartment of the palace, is decorated with an artistic ornamental motif mosaic. It is a circular composition within a square frame, with sprigs branching out from a central rose to the circumference.
The spaces in between are filled with flowers, leaves, and spirals. Female figures, whose lower part ends in a palmette, are depicted in the square’s corners. This mosaic, made of varying shades of river pebbles, is a beautiful work for its symmetry and grace. Ancient people were real artisans.
