The Hotel des Invalides is an exceptional monument
In 1821, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte died and was buried on the British-owned island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic. Only after extensive diplomacy between France and England were his remains exhumed from a simple grave on that island and returned to France.
While the Arc de Triomphe and the Basilica of Saint-Denis were both considered his final resting place, King Louise Phillipe chose this imposing building. This 17th-century structure was one of Paris’s grandest and most prestigious. Today, tourists can take a look at the French Emperor’s final resting place.
