The ‘hush shopkeepers’ were in charge of the alcoholic beverages during Prohibition
As most of us are aware, there was Prohibition in the United States in the early 20th century. During that time, it was illegal to buy, sell or consume alcohol. What may be lesser known is that “hush shopkeepers” were the ones in charge of selling the illegal alcohol to their trusty and thirsty customers.
The hard part about being a hush shopkeeper was trying to keep their business on the low. After all, their work was completely illegal. Still, it must have been hard for some people to live under those restrictive circumstances. So, in a way, these alcohol smugglers were doing a little good by spreading cheer to the community.
