Haberdashers sold the necessary items for sewing
Before crafts stores combined all the necessary materials for activities, like drawing, collaging, and sewing, there were specialized shops for each kind of craft. Haberdasheries were the ones to sell the items used for sewing. And, as one can imagine, the haberdashers were the ones in charge of running these stores.
In the 1800s, housewives would stop by a haberdasher to pick up sewing tools, such as buttons, threads, and ribbons, whenever they needed them. Sadly, with time, selling these sewing essentials was no longer a profitable business, and these stores were wiped out when larger and better-equipped crafts stores became more common.
