Alchemists were the ancient scientists
The art of alchemy was born in ancient Egypt. It actually comes from the word “Khem.” In 16th century Europe, alchemy was very important, leading to the discovery of many chemical processes and the means required for them. By the 18th century, alchemy had turned into a full-blown profession.
There were two groups of alchemists. The first one focused on the discovery of new compounds and their reactions. This one led to what is now the science of chemistry. The second group continued to look at the more spiritual, metaphysical side of alchemy, like the search for immortality and the transmutation of base metals into gold.
