Until the 1940s, typists had to transcribe documents with a typewriter
The popularity of typists reached its peak in the 1940s. At this time, there was a notoriously high demand for typists, which meant that the compensation for this job was particularly high. Just as we have seen with human computers and switchboard operators, this profession was mainly dominated by women.
We still have typists nowadays. However, they no longer use a typewriter for their job. Instead, these workers have special keyboards that allow them to write more words in a shorter period of time. This means that, back in the day, this profession required much more patience and time than today.
