‘Lectors’ went to offices to read news and literature to the workers
Being bored at work does not seem like a common issue nowadays. Employees can just turn on the radio or surf the Internet to get updated about current news, or else they can open their favorite streaming platform and listen to a podcast or the latest album by their favorite artist. But in the 19th century, things were different.
Getting a radio to listen to the news or a radio drama was too expensive to have in offices or factories. That is why some places had their very own professional “lectors” to read news, stories, and even novels to employees out loud to keep them entertained and motivated throughout the day.
