Logs had to be driven manually by humans
Before trucks were commonly used for transporting goods, logs had to be carried to the sawmill by way of rivers. For this task, there were workers called “log drivers,” also known as “river pigs.” These men guided the logs down the river and ensured that there were no issues along the way. Talk about logging hours.
For thousands of years, wood has been a key material in construction. However, until the 1940s, transporting these tree logs required human labor to get from the forests to the mills. So, when better roads were set up and the technology of cars improved, this incredibly tedious job completely disappeared.
