During colonial times, necessary women cleaned the homes of the wealthy
One might be wondering what on Earth these women did to be called “necessary” women. The answer is actually much simpler than expected. This job was very common in the times of the colony in America. The work of these women consisted of cleaning the homes of wealthy families.
Not only did these women clean, but they also had to handle and dispose of the human waste that was in all of the homes’ chamber pots. That is the main reason why they were so necessary. Thankfully, as the years passed, toilets and waste disposal systems were invented, and this job was no longer all that necessary.
