Hobblers towed ships to port
Traveling by water was much more common in the past, especially when horses were the fastest way to travel on land. Boats and ships provided a safe means of transportation that could save people plenty of time. However, because almost every wealthy person had a water vehicle, the profession of hobblers became necessary at ports.
One might be wondering what a hobbler did. Well, their main job was to tow both small and large ships to port and keep them organized in the 1800s. This position was mainly reserved for young men because it was pretty dangerous to be hobbling from the ships to the deck all day.
