Summer Garden
The Summer Garden is another historic public garden. It occupies an island between the Neva, Fontanka, Moika, and the Swan Canal in downtown Saint Petersburg in Russia. The garden is believed to have been named after an adjacent garden owned by Peter the Great. The garden is a branch of Russia’s Saint Petersburg-based national art treasury Museum.
Summer Garden was designed by Tsar Peter in 1704, with the assistance of the Dutch gardener and physician Nicolaas Bidloo. In 1712, planting was further extended by the Dutch gardener Jan Roosen, who was the chief gardener of the park until 1726. The paths are lined with a hundred allegorical marble sculptures that were moved indoors in the late 20th century, while modern replicas took their place in the park.
