Stourhead Roof Gardens
Stourhead Landscape Garden is often acclaimed to be England’s greatest landscape garden. Before it was built, Henry Hoare wanted to recreate a landscape of antiquity and uniqueness. Since he had no clear idea of what to do, he sought the help of Italy’s great landscape painters, Claude Lorrain and Nicholas Poussin.
The shining structure in the Stourhead Roof Gardens is the Pantheon, designed and commissioned by famous architect Henry Flitcroft. Local mason William Privett built the pantheon in 1753 using Chilmark limestone with a brick and timber-supported dome.
