Italian Renaissance Garden Style
The Italian Renaissance garden was a new style of garden design that emerged in the late 15th century at villas in Rome and Florence. Its design was inspired by classical ideals of order and beauty and was mainly intended for the pleasure of viewing the garden and the landscape. Garden design became larger, grander, and more symmetrical during this period.
It was lined with fountains, statues, grottoes, water organs, and other features to delight or provoke excitement in the visitors’ and viewers’ minds. The Italian Renaissance garden, like Renaissance art and architecture, emerged from the rediscovery by Renaissance scholars of classical Roman models.
