Prague’s astronomical clock is the oldest one still-functioning
The city of Prague in the Czech Republic is home to many ancient wonders. Mounted on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall building is this incredible clock, or “Orloj,” the oldest in the world still functioning. The clock does not only tells time but also tells the sun and the moon’s position, and has a calendar dial with medallions that represent the months.
The most ancient parts are the mechanical clock and the astronomical dial, which date back to 1410. The gothic sculptures that surround the face were added in 1490. It was broken and repaired many times throughout the centuries, and different elements were added as well.
