This ancient Turkish city is a treasure trove of mosaics
The city of Zeugma in Turkey has a rich history. It was first founded by the Greeks in the 3rd century BCE and was named Seleucia. The city was conquered by the Romas in 64 BCE and renamed Zeugma. The place is known for its Roman-era mosaics, such as this one, which is about 2,200 years old and it is remarkably well-preserved.
This colorful floor mosaic is made out of glass. These decorations were in most wealthy homes and the subject matter depended on the room’s function. Most depicted mythological figures such as gods or ancient heroes. This one depicts the nine Muses, which means the owner of the house must have been an educated man.
