This medieval jewel was found by a man with a metal detector
There are plenty of stories about ordinary people finding treasures and having their lives changed drastically. For 34-year-old Mark Thompson, the story became reality. He was canvassing Sherwood forest, which is believed to have been home to Robin Hood when his metal detector went off. It turns out he had found a priceless piece of history.
It was a medieval gold ring. The ring’s body is made out of gold and is engraved on one side with a figure of infant Christ, and on the other with one of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. The stone in the middle is an unusually large sapphire. The British Museum authenticated the find and it has been valued at £50,000. Lucky him!
