This 17th century Ottoman tent is incredibly detailed
This Ottoman Empire was one of the longest-lasting in the world. It was founded around 1299 by Sultan Osman I and was disbanded in the aftermath of WWI, in 1922. The Ottomans ruled large swathes of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and North Africa, and the military might of its armies was a bane to Europeans for many centuries.
But relations between the Empire and Europe were not always strained. In fact, the tent in this photo was not looted but purchased from Turkey by King August the Strong in the 17th century. It is 20 meters long, 8 meters wide and 6 meters high, and is made out of silk and gilded leather. Today it is part of the Turkish Chamber exhibit in Dresden’s Residenzschloss museum.
