The detail on this sculpture gives the effect that it is not made of marble, but of real flesh
The baroque style of sculpture, of which this next one is an example, was popular from the 17th to the mid-18th century. It is characterized by the subjects’ dynamic movement and contrived poses, and the works often presented multiple viewing angles. Gian Lorenzo Bernini is one of the greatest names in the field, and his works are proof of his skill.
This piece was commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in 1621. It depicts the Roman myth of the Abduction of Proserpina by Pluto, god of the Underworld. Bernini’s mastery manages to make hard stone look supple and soft like flesh, as can be seen where Pluto’s hands are grabbing onto Proserpina’s body.
