These mammoth bone huts may be the oldest human dwellings
In 1965 a farmer from Mezyrich, Ukraine, was in the process of expanding his cellar when he stumbled across a giant bone. Further excavations at the site revealed it was the lower jawbone of a wholly mammoth. Several prehistoric huts were found as well, all made out of the giant animal’s bones, which dated back to between 23,000 BCE and 12,000 BCE.
These huts might be the earliest example of a human dwelling we have records of. Although they were found collapsed, the bones were arranged in a circular pattern, and archeologists believe that they may have been covered by animal skins. Little is known about prehistoric peoples, but one thing is for sure: they were strong enough to move those mammoth bones.
