Hippos secret a red liquid through their skin
Throughout many hundreds of years, different societies have felt completely astonished by the hippopotamus or hippo. Since even the time of Ancient Greeks, people have been mystified by this animal because it appeared to sweat blood. Yes, hippos do secret a red liquid, but it is not blood or sweat.
These pachyderms do in fact secrete an oil-like sticky red liquid from their skin. This perspiration is sometimes called “blood sweat” and it comes from special glands, but it is not sweat. While mammals sweat to cool down, this fluid functions as a skin moisturizer, water repellent, sunscreen, and antibiotic.
