Woodpecker tongues wrap around the back of their brains
Although people do not see them very often, the tongues of woodpeckers are a big part of what makes them unique. Like all birds, woodpeckers have tongues tucked inside their large beaks. Different species of woodpecker use their tongues in different ways, depending on what and how they eat it.
In combination with their beaks shaped like chisels, their long, specialized tongues help woodpeckers access food better than other birds. But that is not the only special fact about them. Woodpeckers tend to have surprisingly long tongues, which make them reach deep into crevices, and they keep them rolled up inside their skulls.
