Greenland sharks are blind due to a parasite
Greenland sharks are not very liked among humans. First, we give them a scientific name that is pretty mean. “Somniosus microcephalus,” literally means: “the sleepy small-head” in Latin. Then, we also call them toxic for their concentrations of natural antifreeze. However, we should be more gentle to this poor animal.
You might not know it, but the vast majority of Greenland sharks are completely blind. Though they are born with functional eyes, almost a hundred percent of the adults will have small, parasitic crustaceans on the sharks’ corneas. This sounds awful, but it might actually be helpful according to some scientists.
